Congratulations on your study place! You have an exciting and rewarding journey ahead that will bring new friends, experiences, and knowledge. Here’s what you can expect from your study period. Before diving into student life, there are a few things to take care of. We have gathered some tips for new students to help you prepare for the start of your studies.
1. Finding accommodation
If you are moving for your studies, one of your first tasks is to find accommodation. You can look for housing on the private market or through a student housing foundation. It’s also worth using your connections and social media groups — your own student organization might have a group where housing ads are shared. Be proactive and start your search early, as housing often goes quickly.
2. Registration and fees
Remember to register for attendance on time and take care of the necessary payments. The student union fee is mandatory for university students, but for students in a university for applied studies the union fee is optional. Additionally, remember the FSHS fee for healthcare, which is paid directly to Kela. These fees are important as they enable student health services and many other student benefits.
3. Organize your finances
A student’s income often consists of student allowance, student loans, and housing allowances. Be sure to apply for these allowances in time and check how possible work income affects your grants. Kela’s quick guide provides easy-to-find information regarding student benefits.
Note that cuts to the general housing allowance came into effect on April 1, 2024. You can calculate the amount of your housing allowance using Kela’s housing allowance calculator.
4. Familiarize yourself with the university’s info materials
The university’s website contains a lot of useful information for new students. Familiarize yourself with the orientation week schedules, upcoming courses, available systems, library services, and student cafeterias. Being well-prepared makes the start smoother and less stressful.
5. Download the Tuudo App
The Tuudo app, which helps students manage their daily lives, is already used by over 40 educational institutions across Finland, including universities and secondary schools. Check if your future school is one of them. Tuudo has many useful features, such as course registrations, schedules, student lunch menus, and academic records. You can also find valuable student benefits and job opportunities for both summer and during your studies through Tuudo.
If you have already received your school credentials, you can log into Tuudo with them. Some schools also offer a special section for new students, so you can explore the app beforehand without credentials.
6. Get a student card
Student cards are increasingly digital, but physical student cards are still available. Tuudo also has its own digital student ID, which entitles you to student-priced meals and discounts on VR and Matkahuolto services. Check if your school already uses Tuudo’s digital student ID.
The digital student card is always with you on your phone, and best of all, it’s free for students! Tuudo’s student ID activates automatically once you have registered for attendance and paid the necessary fees. Remember, your study rights begin at the start of the semester, so the student card is only valid from then on.
7. Follow your school’s and student organization’s social media channels
Stay up to date with events and important news by following your school’s and student organization’s social media channels. Also, join possible groups on WhatsApp or Facebook. This way, you get current information and can join events.
In addition, follow @tuudoapp on Instagram and TikTok. Through these, you’ll get information about student life and useful tips for studying and using Tuudo. You’ll also be among the first to know about Tuudo’s digital events, like student recruitment fairs.
Finally
Summer is a great time to prepare for your studies. By taking care of the necessary tasks early, you can start your studies relaxed and confident. Also, remember to enjoy the summer, recharge your batteries, and mentally prepare for this new phase of your life. Good luck and enjoy your time studying!
